Organ Donation

13 Sep

“There are 115,365 people waiting for an organ donation.
18 people will die each day waiting for an organ. 1 organ can save up to 8 lives.” -OrganDonor.gov

I am writing this post after spending the night in the hospital SICU waiting room. My husband’s brother-in-law has been on the heart transplant list for over a year and yesterday they got the call that there was a heart for him.

He was diagnosed with an enlarged heart 11 years ago when he was given only a month to live, but has pulled through many more years. November of last year his heart was deteriorating so they inserted an LVAD machine to take some pressure off of his heart. But the LVAD was only a temporary fix so the waiting continued.

Until all the prayers were answered.

While we wait for him to get out of surgery, I want to talk a little bit about organ donation.

There are currently 16 (possibly now only 15) people in Iowa on the heart transplant list. Kraig was number 3 from the top. In order for him to get a heart, the heart had to not only be in perfect condition, but be the same blood type, have enough of that blood type on hand at the hospital, the person must be 30 and under I believe is the age for him at 47, could be a male or a female, within a weight range of his weight, and no other issues.

Because someone signed up to be an organ donor at some point in their lives, they were able to save our loved one along with many others.

We also have been thinking a lot about the donor’s family and what they are going through right now. The donor and their family are heroes most definitely and I know our family is forever grateful.

Check out some more information from the Iowa Donor Registry and OrganDonor.gov website.

So fabulous that he got a heart. If I were the donors family, I think it would give much more meaning to my loved one’s death to know that others were going to live because of it. I signed up to be a donor a long time ago. 🙂

Everyone that is young and healthy should be an organ donor! Glad to hear that your brother-in-law was able to get a heart!
