Rest, Relaxation, and Minnie Mouse

20 Sep

This past weekend, David and I rented a cabin to getaway and recharge for our anniversary in a small town called Harper’s Ferry. It was relatively close to home but very much secluded with lots of nature surrounding it.

Of course NOW I wish I would have taken a picture of David’s truck with all of our stuff loaded up when we headed out, we completely over packed and it was a bit ridiculous for a weekend trip.

We got to the cabin and it was absolutely gorgeous! A log cabin, adorably decorated, in the middle of well, nothing much at all! It was perfect! We also got to take Gizmo on vacation with us for the first time! He loved it!

Friday night we had pizza pudgy pies over the fire and s’mores, and wine of course. Classy right?

We sat by the fire until about 8:30 when we heard a pack of coyotes that sounded wayyy too close for comfort and decided it’d be best for us to head inside to watch a movie instead.

Saturday we woke up and made Lazy Omelets for breakfast. These things are genius! A close friend of the family once told my parents how to make these and they have done them camping a lot now. They are great to make any time but especially when camping or tailgating because they are just too easy! All you do is crack 2 eggs into a Ziplock baggie, add in some shredded cheese and whatever toppings you want to mix in (mushrooms, peppers, onions, bacon, etc.) zip the baggie shut, and place it into a pan of boiling water for 15 minutes or so. Once they are done (no longer runny), they plop right out on to a plate. Try them! 🙂

After breakfast we went to a place called Effigy Mounds to hike on a trail there and see some history as well as some pretty awesome views!

Gizmo lead the way and we did a nice 3 mile trail followed by a picnic. The weather was so perfect and when you’d look up the leaves were literally falling around us. I could have stayed there forever.

Saturday night we planned to do steaks on the grill, mashed potatoes, corn, and wine for dinner.

About 8:00 we were just getting done eating and something caught the corner of my eye…

Something running down the side door’s trim…a mouse! A pesky, dirty, sneaky, crawly, speedy mama mouse!

I spent the next 2 hours standing on this dining room table’s chair holding Gizmo screaming my fair share while David scrambled to find, bait, and set traps.

We dealt with this mouse for what seemed like forever and never did trap it. After considering to head home as I was thoroughly creeped out and squeamish, we decided to tough it out.

We are pretty sure there was a nest of baby mice in the fold out couch mattress because that was where the mouse at one point grabbed a baby to try to get it out of the A/C unit (which is how the mouse got in in the first place). Did you know that mice reproduce exponentially? Is it wrong that I was, for a split second, jealous of this mouse’s fertility?! haha

Even with our little furry friend’s visit, we loved our trip. We saw lots of deer, got lots of relaxation in, and didn’t have to worry about a single responsibility.

The weekend came and went so quickly but it was really nice to just get away for a few days and take a deep breath.

and I thought I loved you then…

Dear husband,

On our wedding day, my sister said in her speech to us, “may today be the day you love each other the least.” That held true last year, and even more this year.

We have been through so much these last 2 years, but we did it together.

We laugh together, cry together, argue together, make memories together, and through it all I couldn’t imagine my life without you.

I hope someday we can share our love with a little one but yesterday, today, and tomorrow, I am so thankful I have you. I love you!

Happy 2 Year Wedding Anniversary, David!!

Love,
Mallory
