Getting my fitness back on

With the Holidays and all of the sharing of New Year’s Resolutions, as well as over abundance of food and treats, I have been slowly reincorporating some fitness back into my life over the past month or so.

This past weekend, I went for my first run in a long time. My mom and I ventured down to the ice arena where you can do laps around the top. We walked a few miles and I decided to run 2.5. It felt great! I paid for it the next day though, my legs definitely felt it and were thanking me for working them again. But while I ran, I thought about all of my progress this past year and instead of thinking “you can go further, fight through it” I was thinking “this feels great, now that’s enough for now, you’ve come too far.”

I’m not planning to go full in again, but after the Dr. reassured me that my weight was healthy and exercising again was OK as long as I did it in moderation and made sure I was refueling properly. After this past year and my struggle with Hypothalamic Amenorrhea and now my choice to try fertility treatments this month, I want to make sure I don’t reverse any progress I have made.

I don’t have a fitness ‘plan’ in place because I am just trying to take it day by day and not get wrapped up into many goals or personal bests. I want to listen to my body. If I need a full out rest day because I am sore from the day before (or even the day before that) I don’t want to push it and will take that rest day to let my muscles recover and grow stronger. I would like to get a few days of 30 minutes of cardio in a week whether it’s on the elliptical, walking, or running a few laps around the ice arena. I also have been pulling out some Jillian videos to challenge my muscles again as well as Cassey’s Blogilates.


Last night I did Level 2 of Jillian’s Yoga Meltdown. I reviewed Level 1 and I liked Level 2 even more. It is a nice balance between low-intensity strength moves, flexibility, and balance. Afterwards I wasn’t exhausted and drained, instead I felt reenergized and overall healthy.


It’s all about balance in life. Balance is key. If there is one thing I have learned from the past 2 years is the importance of balance in all areas of life. Whether it’s fitness, nutrition, a career, school, etc.; balance will pull you through to be the best you can be overall.

I don’t plan on going out and working my fitness back to where it use to be. I don’t plan on losing even a single pound. I plan on eating what I want, getting my heart rate up to retain my health, and moving forward with 2013 with a great focus on balance in all areas of my life. This year, I don’t have a New Year’s Resolution except to be a normal, healthy person inside and out.


Fitness Friday: Blogilates

Happy Friday everyone! I am up early to head to work to make up my time while I am at my appointment today. I am anxious to see my new Dr. and get some input and another opinion for what’s next. I will let you know how it goes!

Today though I want to touch on some fitness. Woahhhh, did she just say fitness?? That is something I haven’t touched on in a longggg time because I haven’t been focusing on that so much right now in my life but today I wanted to share with you all a new workout blog I found and one that I really enjoy.

Now that I have gained to a healthier weight, though my body is still very sensitive to stress so I can’t do anything real high impact or intense, I wanted to find something that would help me incorporate some strength training back in so that I can keep my muscles strong and have that feeling of accomplishment again, AND to help beat the winter blues!

Before I was diagnosed with HA, I  was starting to cut back slightly on the cardio and incorporate more resistance training and weights into my routine. I am the worst at doing weights without some sort of video because I never know if I am doing them right and I never know what muscle group or move to do next.

I came across the blog Blogilates. Cassey Ho is a pilates and fitness instructor that blogs her workouts online.

And look at that, she’s listed #2 (right under one of my biggest influencers in the health and fitness world…) Jillian Michaels! Cassey has so much energy and spunk to her and she is the best at telling you what you should be doing and talking you through each move. I hate workout videos where you have to try and stretch your head to see what’s going on or stop what you are doing and figure it out while missing the workout the whole time! I also love how she incorporates dance moves and music into her workouts which definitely wake me up and make me feel energized.

There are workout plans, email newsletters, meal plans, recipes, fashion, music, and if you want to do more of an intense workout, she can cover you there too with her HIIT series!

I really like pilates because it helps with flexibility and strength. In high school, I was hooked on Winsor Pilates, and I have done this workout way too many times. I have the WORST flexibility, like can’t even touch my toes bad…but I remember when I would do pilates, everything just felt stretched, taller, and longer…I also was standing up straighter than ever.

The biggest thing I remember about pilates is to always keep your core muscles nice and tight and when you do the moves, try hard to keep everything centered and not to wiggle around too much. Pilates is great for strengthening your core which helps with your posture, ab strength, and balance.

So if you are looking to look and feel stronger, dance a little in your living room, feel sore the next day, and not hear your Dad tell you to stand up straight anymore 😉 check out Cassey’s blog at Blogilates. She will make you sweat, feel strong, and gives off more energy than 10 cups of coffee!!

I am looking forward to doing some more of her challenges as well as reading her posts and trying some of her recipes.
